Pearson English Spring Days 2021

Spring is a season for new growth, new beginnings, and optimism. Similarly, Pearson English Spring Days is a free online learning event that focuses on professional development, learning about the latest trends, and discussing current topics in English language teaching. This year’s event will take place May 4-6, 2021.

Our speakers will offer insights for the future of language teaching, provide useful teaching resources, and share tips you can put into practice in your classrooms. Based on feedback from our teacher groups, the sessions will address three main topics:

  • Hybrid Learning: The challenging task of teaching a class of students who are split into online and face-to-face groups, simultaneously. How can teachers rise up to the challenge of teaching hybrid classes effectively?
  • Lost Learning: School closures around the world have resulted in significant learning gaps and differing levels. What can be done to address this?
  • Technostress: The anxiety linked to using new technology and the pressure to be constantly connected. What can teachers do to combat this?
The opening plenary with Professor Ken Beatty, an expert on language teaching from primary to university level, will examine the impact of online learning over the past year and explore both the challenges and advantages for teachers and learners. In the Round Table, our final session of Spring Days 2021, the panel will talk about their experiences and how they’ve fully embraced Hybrid Learning. We’ll hear from teachers on the challenges they’ve faced and answer their burning questions.

What else have we got in store for you this year? With our speakers covering areas from assessment to self-care, there are lots of interesting webinars to choose from.

Note: Times are in British Summer Time, and webinars are repeated to accommodate different time zones.

Critical thinking

Build success beyond the classroom

Critical thinking is a complex process that involves reflection, analysis and evaluation. In the ELT classroom, it is about building academic literacy, not just linguistic proficiency. So, ELT coursework needs to build language skills alongside skills including evaluating, analyzing, and reasoning for academic success.

Building critical thinking skills aids in developing fluency and the production of authentic language while creating an opportunity for deeper learning and engagement. Exposing students to critical thinking tasks that are part of a contextualized language lesson, prepares them for what lies beyond their EAP coursework.

Remote Learning Strategies with Side by Side eText
Presented by Bill Bliss

After making the emergency transition from F2F (face-to-face) to remote instruction, many programs are preparing to continue distance learning for another term as buildings remain closed or partially reopen with social distancing. Challenges for language instruction include how to promote interactive communication practice, balance synchronous and asynchronous learning, build a classroom community virtually, and deliver remote instruction that is effective on a range of student devices.

This webinar will offer strategies for using the Side by Side eTexts along with Zoom and other platforms to meet these challenges. Using the digital texts, instructors can create a dynamic and interactive remote learning experience for their students. They can also create classes and post assignments directly to students’ eTexts without the need for an LMS.
After a brief overview of remote instruction challenges and a tour of eText features, the presenter will provide practical tips for using the digital tools, blending remote modes of instruction, and handling tasks such as onboarding students and creating courses. (A quick-start guide with detailed step-by-step instructions for these remote learning strategies is available here.)
